The Graystone Monarchs, directed by Josh Duffee, is an all-star group that specializes in the hot dance music of the 1920s. For this recording, the group evokes the sounds of the Jean Goldkette Orchestra in the days when Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer, the Dorsey Brothers, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, and other luminaries were in the band.
This limited edition 78 rpm vinyl record features four exclusive performances made just for this EP. You will not find them on any other record or CD. "Tiger Rag" breathes vibrant new life into a jazz standard with plenty of hot solos fueled by Leigh Barker's slap bass reminiscent of Steve Brown. "Stampede" offers us a chance to hear what the legendary unissued (and subsequently lost) Goldkette recording of the Fletcher Henderson classic might have sounded like. "I'm Gonna Meet My Sweetie Now" is a thrilling performance of the original Goldkette arrangement. The EP wraps up with a fiery rendition of "Don't Wake Me Up (Let Me Dream)" that builds from the very first note to a rousing full ensemble conclusion. All four are full-length performances; we have taken advantage of microgroove's finer threading to fit more than six minutes of crisp, hi-fi sound on each side of this 10-inch 78.
Personnel: Andy Schumm (cornet); Mike Davis (trumpet); Jim Fryer (trombone); Michael McQuaid (alto sax, clarinet); Jason Downes (alto sax, baritone sax, clarinet), Jay Rattman (tenor sax, baritone sax, clarinet); Tom Roberts (piano); John Scurry (banjo, guitar); Leigh Barker (string bass); Josh Duffee (drums, leader).
Both sides were recorded in the warm, spacious acoustics of the Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania on July 22, 2015.
Limited edition pressing of 1100 copies.
Note: This is a stereo, microgroove, 10-inch vinyl record meant to be played at 78 RPM. It is compatible with all modern turntables (post-1950s) fitted with a stereo cartridge and capable of spinning at 78 RPM. For best results, we strongly recommend a cartridge capable of tracking at 3-4 grams. Rugged cartridges designed for DJ use (like the Stanton 500, Shure M44-7, or Ortofon VNL) work better than delicate, high-end "audiophile" cartridges. Use an ordinary LP stylus; no special stylus is required. This record should NOT be played on vintage "wind-up" machines with steel needles. For your convenience, a complimentary MP3 download of this record will be provided upon checkout.
