Ondanks onderwijs van de beste leraren liet ook dat hem niet het innerlijke geluk vinden waar hij naar zocht. Daarom trok hij erop uit om te leren van religieuze leraren en ontdekte hij meditatie. Uiteindelijk koos hij voor afzondering, om een blijvend geluk te vinden dat niet verandert.

Op zijn 35e bereikte hij verlichting. Vanaf dat moment reisde hij door het land als leraar en deelde hij wat hij had ontdekt: een pad naar een diepe, blijvende rust. Veel leerlingen volgden hem.

Toen hij 80 was, overleed hij. Hij liet een rijke leer achter die inzicht geeft in het leven en verklaart waarom het nastreven van geluk vaak niet lukt. Hij noemde dit de vier edele waarheden. Tegelijkertijd bood hij ook een uitweg aan, het nobele achtvoudige pad.
