Folio From The Shahnama Of Shah TahmaspFirdausi’s epic poem the Shahnameh (Book of Kings), completed in 1010, recounts the history of all of Iran’s shahs (kings) up to the Arab conquest in 642 AD and the country’s adoption of Islam. A large part of the poem focuses on prehistoric, legendary kings, some of whom ruled for hundreds of years and established man’s knowledge of everything from fire to weaving. Haftvād is a legendary character whose story appears alongside accounts of the rise of Ardashir I, the founder of the Sassanid dynasty of Persia, in the third century C.E. Haftvad is a wicked king who rules over his people with cruelty and oppression. One day, a wise man warns him that a giant worm will one day rise up and destroy his kingdom as punishment for his sins. Haftvad, fearing for his life, orders the execution of all newborn babies in his realm to prevent any potential hero from rising up against him. However, one child named Zal is spared and raised in secret. As Zal grows up, he learns of his true identity and eventually confronts Haftvad and defeats the monstrous worm, thus freeing the land from tyranny. It's a classic tale of heroism, destiny, and the triumph of good over evil.
