In the German speaking world of the Victorian era, rings bearing this motto were given as tokens of love, protection, and safe-keeping. They were often exchanged between family members or sweethearts departing on long journeys or even going to war. While black enamel was sometimes used in mourning jewellery, here it serves primarily to make the inscription stand out.
