The Devil's Postpile Minarets Thousand Island Lake map covers many areas and trails from the Devils Postpile National Monument; Gem Lake; Minarets; Garnet Lake; Ritter Range; Rainbow Falls; June Mountain; Thousand Island Lake; Agnew Meadow and much more.
Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devils Postpile National Monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its' columns tower up to 60 feet and display a striking symmetry.
The Minarets are a series of jagged peaks located in the Ritter Range, a sub-range of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. They are easily viewed from Minaret Summit, which is accessible by auto. Collectively, they form an are arete (a narrow ridge of rock that separates two valleys) which is a prominent feature in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, formerly known as the Minaret Wilderness.
Thousand Island Lake is regarded as one of the most spectacular lakes in the Eastern Sierra. Banner Peak, a towering 12,936-foot mountain above the lake’s west shore, is reflected in its clear blue water. The lake has numerous (if not a thousand) small islands. Both John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail pass Thousand Island Lake, giving hikers significant and scenic routes to consider.
