Overview

The Hairy Rhinopias, also known as the Weedy Scorpionfish, is one of the most sought-after and spectacular marine fish in the world. Its elaborate frilly appendages, bold colors, and mesmerizing camouflage make it a true centerpiece for display or collector aquariums. Slow-moving and full of character, this rare ambush predator is prized by experienced aquarists for its beauty and unique behavior.

Origin

Found across the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia, Rhinopias frondosa inhabits sandy or rubble bottoms near coral reefs, blending perfectly into its surroundings to ambush unsuspecting prey.

Feeding

A carnivorous ambush predator that feeds primarily on small fish and crustaceans. It often requires live foods such as shrimp or small fish initially but can be trained to accept frozen meaty foods like silversides, krill, or mysis once acclimated. Feed every 1–2 days.

Tank Mates

Best housed with peaceful, larger tank mates that are too big to be eaten—such as tangs, angels, or larger wrasses. Avoid aggressive species and small fish or shrimp, which will be viewed as prey.

Aggression

Peaceful and sedentary. The Hairy Rhinopias spends most of its time resting on the substrate, relying on camouflage and stealth rather than aggression.

Experience Level

Recommended for advanced aquarists. This rare species requires excellent water quality, careful feeding management, and a quiet environment to thrive.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 75°F – 80°F (24°C – 27°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG
  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Rare, breathtaking, and truly one of a kind, the Hairy Rhinopias is the crown jewel of any display aquarium—perfect for dedicated marine enthusiasts and collectors.

Great for protecting my maps
Size: Regular - 12 x 16 Inches
Fits my exploring maps just right. Heavier duty than expected. Ziplock closure is tight and should last for years.

Terrific addition to your backpacking gear
I like this map holder for its versatility in holding different size maps. Once sealed, it was very effective at keeping moisture out and protecting the maps. I originally used this on a 13K mountain ascent. Worked great. The only thing that can be tricky at times is sealing the top. It's not as easy as sealing a typical zip-loc kitchen bag, takes some doing to get it to seal.

Best Map Case Ever!!!
Size: Regular - 12 x 16 Inches
Best Map case in the market! Field tested and keeps everything dry. The size is fantastic and you can run paracord through the rings. I would recommend this to anyone that uses a map. You definitely pay for what you get and that's high quality and functionality.

Just right for protecting river trip guides
Size: Regular - 12 x 16 Inches
Nice and durable - heavy duty. Getting ziplock to close is a pain though - lick or spit helps.
