For most of us, a life is made up of so many small, quiet, and often beautiful moments. In this sweet picture by Herbert Arnould Olivier, we see the Holy Family one late afternoon, Mary holding and chatting to the baby, with Joseph kneeling before them, fashioning a stick to hold up a lily. They are in the midst of lilies, which symbolize purity. And if you look closely, you’ll see that the stick Joseph is using is actually a small cross. But that is a long time away, and at the moment things are tranquil and beautiful.
Herbert Arnould Olivier (1861-1952) was a British artist, who, according to the Tate Museum, was best known for his portrait and landscape paintings. He had a long and successful career in art. He was the uncle of the actor Lawrence Olivier.
This picture was painted in 1927 and thus is out of copyright. We have worked on this image to take out flaws in the file, and as such, our afternoon of tinkering is in copyright, hence our version of the picture. The worker is worth his wage.
We decorate our vestibule at our parish, St. Mary's in Lincoln, with Catholic art we frame. This picture is going to go by one of the doors from the vestibule into the sanctuary, echoing the door in the picture, as we go from darkness into the light and life of Jesus and Mary. - Sue Kouma Johnson
Please note: The image is smaller than the paper There is a white border of about 1.3" for 8.5x11" pictures. Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in a frame without a matt.- Sue Kouma Johnson, text and image restoration.
