ON THE ROAD WITH THE OLD STRIPPER: A Journal is a journal about a filmmaker who takes an epic 48 state road trip over one summer with his Mother, a burlesque legend. Award-winning filmmaker Jack Truman and his real-life Mother, burlesque legend Opal Dockery, embark on an unforgettable 48 state cross-country road trip. On the road, Truman and Dockery experience epic memories: traveling to all 48 states nationwide coast to coast, including Washington, DC: visiting Opal's dancing cities from yesterday; going to landmarks nationwide; eating at over 20 vegan restaurants around the country; spending each night in cheap motel rooms; while also shooting over 100 hours of footage for a feature film documentary across the country, interviewing over 60 burlesque dancers nationwide, young and old, comparing burlesque now with how it used to be. An epic underground unforgettable journal, ON THE ROAD WITH THE OLD STRIPPER: A Journal opens the reader's eyes to a fascinating life less traveled.

Interesting book, dull period
Format: Paperback
As a Marxist historian, Hobsbawm sees the world at this time, as well as the modern world, as a playground for the forces of capitalism. He apologizes for taking a eurocentric approach to world history, while acknowledging that Europe largely determined the course of world events during this period. In spite of the title, there actually isn't much discussion of colonial empires; Hobsbawm seems more interested in how the Age of Empire affected the rulers more than the ruled. His Marxist sympathies are in evidence and at times make his conclusions a bit predictable, but some of his cultural critiques are quite brilliant. The chapter on the dilemmas posed by modern science is exceptional. Reading a book like this seems to me much more interesting than actually living in this period would have been.
