From the cofounder of VerySmartBrothas.com, and one of the most read writers on race and culture at work today, a provocative and humorous memoir-in-essays that explores the ever-shifting definitions of what it means to be Black (and male) in America

For Damon Young, existing while Black is an extreme sport. The act of possessing black skin while searching for space to breathe in America is enough to induce a ceaseless state of angst where questions such as "How should I react here, as a professional black person?" and "Will this white person's potato salad kill me?" are forever relevant.

What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker chronicles Young's efforts to survive while battling and making sense of the various neuroses his country has given him.

It's a condition that's sometimes stretched to absurd limits, provoking the angst that made him question if he was any good at the "being straight" thing, as if his sexual orientation was something he could practice and get better at, like a crossover dribble move or knitting; creating the farce where, as a teen, he wished for a white person to call him a racial slur just so he could fight him and have a great story about it; and generating the surreality of watching gentrification transform his Pittsburgh neighborhood from predominantly Black to "Portlandia . . . but with Pierogies."

And, at its most devastating, it provides him reason to believe that his mother would be alive today if she were white.

From one of our most respected cultural observers, What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker is a hilarious and honest debut that is both a celebration of the idiosyncrasies and distinctions of Blackness and a critique of white supremacy and how we define masculinity.

Trashed after one wash
Color: Beige, Size: Small
It’s a great looking shirt. The price is good. The fit is good. But it’s so scratchy that it’s like wearing a potato sack. And after washing it ONCE it pilled so bad that I had to throw it away because it looked like an electrical sander had been used on it. But this is what Amazon has become: bad quality everything.

Coofandy has cool shirts!
Size: Large, Color: Army Green
Love this brand. Everything fits! Husband loves the sort of linen shirts. I buy a lot of clothes there too. Go for it. The price is right and if you don't like it, return it, but I think you'll love it!

Not as advertised, but I like it! This run runs small and not the blend stated.
Size: 4X-Large, Color: Sky Blue
I rely on your reviews a lot, so I am paying it forward here. I needed a summery, lightweight linen type shirt with long sleeves because I'm an old, fat guy and I'm getting those ugly, purple bruises on my arms (if you're under 65, just wait ;). I just got my shirt today. I read the reviews and everybody said the quality, sizing and the material were all over the board and mine is no different. The label on mine says 60% cotton, 30% viscose and 10% linen. That's a far cry from the 70% Rayon and 30% Linen as stated. However, this material is very light and smooth and has a lot of stretch. The label can't be correct for the material to have this much stretch, but I like it. It doesn't look anything like the picture either. It has a sort of linen like look, but more of a chambray weave look I would say. And it smells oddly nice, too. I'm sure whatever the smell is will go away after washing, but for now, it's a nice, pleasant, new shirt smell. Must be the Viscose or whatever is in this shirt. It definitely has at least 2% Lycra to be able to stretch like this. Also, the sizing is way off. For reference, I am 5'6" and 270 with a 52" waist (I told you, old, short and fat :). Many of the reviewers said it ran small, so I ordered up to a 4x and it fits just about perfectly for me. I normally wear a 3x and in some shirts that's too big. This is loose enough but not blousey and most importantly, covers my big belly nicely. The stretch in the fabric is a bonus. So I guessed right with the 4x. However, read the reviews and you will see that the sizing appears to be all over the board. Finally, the pocket is oddly small. It is fine for my purposes and I absolutely need a pocket to put my sunglasses in and other various little things, but at least in my version, beware that the pocket is oddly small. I think I got lucky with my order and got what I wanted by default. I will have to be careful washing it, or it might shrink too much (there's no telling what this fabric really is). It is also fairly wrinkled out of the package, but being the cotton/viscose blend that it says it is, it should iron out nicely and not wrinkle with wearing. We shall see. I'm impressed with the silky feeling and light weight of this shirt and although it doesn't really look like a linen shirt, it looks casual enough for me to fit the bill. I will be wearing it with the sleeves rolled up anyway, as I just needed something that looks casually sharp and can cover the ugly bruises on my forearms. As you can tell if you read through the reviews, what you might get seems to be somewhat of a crap shoot, but I like mine, so good luck!
