ZIG KANSTUL:
LAST OF THE GREAT MASTERS

R. DALE OLSON

The story of Zig Kanstul is also the account of brass instrument development from the mid-20th century to the present day. Now this incredible narrative is brought to life in a book: “Zig Kanstul: Last of the Great Masters”. It is authored by R. Dale Olson, a respected member of the international trumpet elite, and a long-time associate of Zig’s. World-renowned artist Arturo Sandoval provides the foreword. Brass designer, historian, and restorer Robb Stewart is editor, with Scott Birdsall providing the cover photograph and book design.

This exceptional book outlines Zig’s personal biography as it relates to brass instrument design and production.  Zig’s apprenticeship under Foster Reynolds, his R&D and production management of F.E. Olds & Son, and roles with the Benge Company and C.G. Conn are also explored. The founding and management of Kanstul Musical Instruments has been the culmination of one of the truly remarkable careers in the history of contemporary brass instrument design and production.

The story is not restricted to Zig Kanstul, but provides invaluable information concerning the historic figures who constitute Kanstul’s professional genealogy. His documented heritage includes the great masters such as William Graves, Elbridge G. Wright, James York, Frank E. Olds, and Foster A. Reynolds. Each are extensively discussed. Additionally, friends, colleagues, and clients—some of the most prestigious brass players, educators, and authorities of the past six decades—offer their personal insights into the work of Zig Kanstul. Over ninety photographs and graphics, many published here for the first time, underscore the depth of historic and technical elements of all brass instruments over one and one-half centuries in the United States.

Zig Kanstul: Last of the Great Masters has quickly become a “must-read” for brass players, educators, scholars, designers, researchers, and anyone else interested in a personal, inside look at the often opaque, but fascinating, world of the art of brass instrument design and production, as viewed through the prism of one of its great geniuses. The 258-page book is available in softcover.

Arturo Sandoval wrote, in the Foreword:

“When I first arrived in the United States, I began working with Zig Kanstul and it was he who designed the exceptional flugelhorn I played for decades. Although I knew that Zig was one of the foremost instrument makers in the country, I did not know that he was one of the most famous in the history of instrument making. As we worked together I came to appreciate his skills and insights in producing some of the best brass instruments in the world. He created instruments that were of the best quality and that possessed an outstanding sound! This was something that not only I appreciated as a musician, but that was inevitably transmitted to the audience as well. I feel very lucky and honored to have known and worked with Zig throughout the years, and I am eternally grateful for his support and for what he contributed not only to the players of his exceptional works of art, but to the industry as a whole.”

One of the most prominent orchestral trumpet players active today wrote, to R. Dale Olson: “Zig should be remembered for all of his creativity and tenacity, and your book eloquently gives him that respect”.

Zig Kanstul: Last of the Great Masters

In this account of the lineage of the great masters of American brass musical instrument making, culminating in the story of Zig Kanstul, R. Dale Olson walks the reader through the history of significant brass design innovation and manufacturing in the United States, from 1824 to 2016.

Being a complex, often mystifying, melding of art and science, the creation of fine brass instruments has involved the passing down of knowledge, hand-to-hand, from one master craftsman to the next, in the ongoing quest for higher quality and more artistically idealized instruments. This book traces that development with both a technical and very personal focus.  Includes detailed historical information and photos by Robb Stewart.  Paperback, 258 pp.

R. Dale Olson, Author

Born in Houston, Texas in 1935, R. Dale Olson lived on Galveston Island, Texas from the age 5 until entering University of North Texas in 1952.  From that University he was awarded the B.A. degree in Music Education in 1956, and the first M.M. degree in Trumpet Performance in 1957. In 1987 he earned an M.A. degree in Experimental Psychology from California State University, Fullerton. He was named Distinguished Alumnus by the University of North Texas in 2007 in recognition of his career in music.

Olson continues to lecture at Universities and International Trumpet Guild Conferences, and is currently engaged in writing Chronology of Innovation, a critique of every United States patent ever granted related to trumpet. Retired from professional performance since 1990, Olson and his wife, Diane, have residences in Galveston, Texas, and Orange County, California. He maintains his own collection of classic English automobiles.

Over a period in excess of sixty years, Olson has been co-researcher in brass instrument acoustics and design with Dr. Robert W. Young (then President of the Acoustical Society of America), acoustician William T. Cardwell, Jr., and instrument maker Zigmant J. Kanstul.

He has delivered lectures at numerous Universities and over ten presentations at International Trumpet Guild Conferences.  Although now retired from performance, Olson performed professionally on trumpet for over 60 years in all genres.

Olson was Director of Research for the firm, F.E. Olds and Son, Inc. for nearly a decade, and later consulted on instrument design and testing for firms such as Besson and Kanstul.

His writings are examples of in-depth, deeply researched, precise works that expand the boundaries of the subjects at hand, and are not simplistic restatements of previous authors. Olson’s works typically carry large numbers of references, indices, and appendices to assist in future scholarly investigations.

Robb Stewart, Editor

Born in Chicago, Robb has lived in Southern California since 1973.  He started learning the brass instrument repair trade at 17 and launched his own shop in 1979.  Always aiming for the best repairs possible including restoring and preserving antiques, Robb also custom builds instruments not otherwise available.  His restoration work has included projects for several museums, but mostly for the burgeoning community of brass instrument collectors.  Robbstewart.com contains hundreds of pages covering brass instrument history and technology including a section devoted to the mechanics of brass instruments.

Scott Birdsall, Book Design

Having played for years alongside Zig Jr. and Jack in the Scouts and Velvet Knights under Zig's direction, Scott went to work at F.E. Olds & Son immediately after high school, with a later stint at Benge.  He heads a graphic design business in Lake Forest, CA.

Super Cute, Fun, & Effective
Color: Lightgreen
This set of water flosser and electric toothbrush are just adorable! The shapes of them fit in the hands really comfortably, but also add to the cuteness as the shapes of the animals! Yes, this is meant for kids - so the toothbrush heads are small (for little kids), and the water flosser doesn't spray terribly hard. BUT they're still very effective. I especially like the water flosser. It can be taken into the bathtub/shower while bathing, so the spray doesn't end up going places we don't want water to go. It has a small tank of water, and I recommend using room temp water (rather than cold) so that it's comfortable on the gums and teeth. Also to note, the flosser doesn't work when it's sideways or upside-down - it needs to be held upright. This set is so cute, easy to use, easy to re-charge, and very comfortable. It's also very good quality - a great purchase. I love it!

4 year old approved!

Love that this is a complete set, down to the wall block for the charger! My daughter is 4 and absolutely loves this set. I personally feel like the toothbrush head is a tad small, but it does do the job well. Its a soft brush head, with plenty of replacement heads. The toothbrush and the flosser both arrived fully charged, and so far we havent had to recharge it, but we're only a few days in. So, it seems to have a pretty good battery life so far. (I will update my review if anything changes on that aspect) The toothbrush and flosser both stand upright independently on the counter, without tipping over. The water flosser is hard fir my daughter to do by herself. She sprays water everywhere, as theres several buttons on it and she cant seem to remember in time which button turns it off. I help her with flossing and its been going fine. Whether youre on high or low the water pressure is not too hard for a kids mouth. In fact, I think the low setting does nothing but rinse the mouth and basically teach the habit of flossing. We use the high setting and it does and OK job. I am a little old school though, and feel like nothing will top a good ole dental floss flossing, but water flossing is a safer route to avoid cutting gums or getting floss stuck between close teeth. The sound level is minimal, a fraction of the sound level my adult water flosser makes. It doesnt shake/vibrate too badly in the hand and theyre bith comfortable to hold, and size appropriate for my (4yrs) daughters hands. It comes in a really nice box, packaged perfectly, making this a great gift for your little ones. The colors and theme makes brushing teeth exciting and fun again for your littles :)

Great for kids
Color: Lightgreen
The HUACOCARE Kids Water Flosser and Electric Toothbrush Combo is an absolute game-changer for establishing a solid dental hygiene routine with children. The light green giraffe and monkey design is incredibly charming and immediately turned what used to be a bedtime struggle into a fun activity that my child actually looks forward to. Having both the sonic toothbrush and the water flosser in one compact unit is brilliant, as it saves counter space while ensuring that every part of their mouth gets a professional-level clean. The three gentle flossing modes and two sonic brushing modes are perfectly calibrated for younger, more sensitive gums, providing a thorough clean without any discomfort. One of the standout features of this set is how braces-friendly it is; the water flosser reaches those tricky spots around wires and brackets that a standard toothbrush simply can't touch. It is clear that a lot of thought went into the ergonomics and the "fun factor," making it a perfect gift that is both practical and engaging. Since we started using this combo, our dentist has noticed a significant improvement in plaque removal and overall gum health. If you are looking for an all-in-one solution to build healthy brushing habits and make dental care feel like less of a chore, this set is worth every penny.

They Work!
Size: 60 Count (Pack of 1)
Thanks to my mouthrinse, I think, I have no issues with my teeth, gums, or breath, but cold air does inflame my sinuses, ETs, and ears. And I have to travel to cold places often. I hate that inflammation! As a classical singer, I really hate it! I have to keep my throat, sinuses, ETs and ears healthy. These probiotics have helped me to do just that. Previously, I tried prescription anti-inflammatories, and while they worked, anti-inflammatories can have undesirable side effects. I didn't experience any, but who knows? They could have been brewing. And I don't like chemical drugs. Much better to restore a healthy balance of bacteria in my upper respiratory system. These probiotics are so easy to take. I just let one dissolve in my mouth in the morning and one in the evening. I take them after breakfast, after brushing my teeth, and after brushing my teeth in the evening. It took a few weeks, but then I started seeing results. My sinuses were clearer, my ETs and ears would no longer close against the cold as they did previously. I no longer get the roaring in my right ear that I got when awakening due to sinus drainage. And I'm sure these probiotics are helping my teeth, gums, and breath even though I didn't really have any issues with them previously. If you decide to take these, and I highly recommend you do, be sure to let them dissolve or chew them slowly. To swallow them whole, which can be done easily, defeats their purpose since they are oral probiotics. And remember, these aren't probiotics for gut health. For that, you need a different probiotic mix, with different cultures. I do not refrigerate my probiotics, ever, and they remain potent. The taste is a light mint, and it's very agreeable. Not bad at all. Even if it were, the health benefits would definitely outweigh it. Bottom line: If you're experiencing any issues with your teeth, gums, breath, sinuses, throat, ETs, or ears, then these probiotics are for you! Try them! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, and greatly pleased, just like I was!

USED FOR SINUS ISSUES WITH GREAT SUCCESS
Size: 60 Count (Pack of 1)
Finally my 3 months of sinus congestion and cough are going away. My ears are also draining slowly too. This + oil pulling is helping with tooth sensitivity. Get this! I have struggled with sinus issues my entire life with brief breaks from problems. I have had easily over 80 antibiotic prescriptions in my life for ear infections, 7 ear surgeries for a non-cancerous tumor, sinus infections, strep, etc. Last year the sinus problems began again and I was becoming dependent on antibiotics (5 infections in 3 months). After researching and concluding the bacterial infections were secondary to a fungal infection, my doctor and I decided to use a Nystatin both orally and powdered form in my netipot, and this cured the problem. However I was misdiagnosed with lyme this summer and was on antibiotics for a month. I also got strep throat, leading to another week of antibiotics. The sinus problems returned. I would have gone back to that doctor for more nystatin, however, I moved so that primary care, who was amazing and listened to me and trusted my science background, was no longer an option for me to visit. So I began researching ways to overcome ENT problems naturally and this probiotic came up as a good choice for sinus and teeth issues (I have also been having severe tooth sensitivity). And I am happy to say it is working. Additionally I have been putting the juice of kimchi up my nostrils and in my ears. The latter resulting in my ears draining onto my pillows for the first few nights. I do not recommend Nystatin or any other fungal killer for that matter. After using Nystatin, I starting developing other problems like random joint and muscle pains, and I believe that is because the fungus was moving out of my intestines into the blood stream to escape the Nystatin (it has low absorption into the blood). I don't even recommend natural fungal killers like oil of oregano, pau d'arcco, neem, etc. I had been using for months and my intestinal candida was not improving. I truly recommend probiotics because biological control is always superior to chemical control. There is less chance for resistance since the organisms evolved together over millenia. Also building up diversity in your microbiome is hugely important. Get a good low-histamine probiotic to help with intestinal candida overgrowth and a good oral probiotic. If you think you have systemic candida, I recommend the book Killing Candida Sweetly. I have found it helpful. I have been attempting to follow the protocols, but even with my moderate adherence, it is working.
