Beyond appearances, there is always something beautiful and stunning about exceptional tools, those machines which are ideal to carry out their assigned duty. We have many great examples throughout our history, such as the double hammer from the builders of ziggurats in the Archaic Age, and from other cultures such as the unipersonal immersion spaceships made by the Turangar Engineers. All of them represent the perfect tool for their specific task. They are pieces that represent the perfect connection that comes about unintentionally between functionality and design. The same thing happened with the Overdron Batroids. They are immense, crude and slow compared to other Batroids. However, just a simple glance will see both the most sophisticated art lover and the most demanding gunsmith overcome with awe. No designer has bothered to soften its techno-organic shapes and no artist has balanced out the sheer volume of muscles that grow so quickly but these represent a celebration of beauty that lacks any aesthetic charm. In other words, it's a functional beauty. They do what they aim to do in an excellent way - the Overdrons have no purpose except to destroy and this is something they do perfectly. It's not surprising that the Ur grew fond of these Batroids as the Overdrons respond and destroy in a most excellent way. They are ingenious while carrying out their work, and one could say that when in action, they have a great deal of personality. No craftsman exists that is unaware of what it means to have the right tool to perform a job – and the Ur know perfectly well they have the right tool for destruction.

Absolutely thrilling and entertaining! Never wanted to put this book down 🫶🏻
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
I’m not gonna lie, I saw this was from Jennifer Lynn Barnes, read the description, and I was immediately hooked. Search and rescue dogs? Check. Family secrets? Check. A thrilling read? Check, check, and check.
I absolutely loved every minute of this book, but considering that Jennifer Lynn Barnes also wrote The Inheritance Games, I shouldn’t have been surprised.
So, plot, characters, and writing. For one, with the plot, I saw a lot of reviews complaining about the open ending. I didn’t find it that open in my opinion. I think it left just enough to let you know that people’s stories don’t end just because an event does. It’s more realistic that way and I seriously don’t understand why people get so mad about it. Besides that complaint from other people (not from me), every bit of the plot was exciting in this book.
As far as the characters go, if you love love love Jameson from The Inheritance Games, you’ll absolutely adore Jude. Same character type and everything. Kira was obviously very reserved and different as a person because of her trauma, but I liked her depth. I wish we would’ve gotten a little more backstory about what happened to her in the woods and why it happened, but that’s okay. And the dogs? Probably the best characters in the whole book.
Lastly, with the writing, if you liked any of Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ previous books, you’ll love this one. I seriously enjoyed this book so much.
Overall, this was a book that I couldn’t put down and literally kept me on my toes. One hundred percent worth it to read (unless you don’t like somewhat open endings). Definitely a top read for this year.
