Aloe dichotoma, commonly known as the Quiver Tree or Tree Aloe, is a striking and iconic succulent tree native to the arid regions of southern Namibia and northern South Africa. It earns its name from the indigenous San people's practice of hollowing out its tubular branches to make quivers for arrows. This slow-growing species can reach heights of 20–30 feet and is characterized by its sculptural, branching form, thick trunk with a smooth, golden-brown bark, and rosettes of blue-green, sword-shaped leaves with small teeth along the margins. In late winter to early spring, Aloe dichotoma produces bright yellow, tubular flowers clustered on tall inflorescences, attracting birds and pollinators. Highly drought-tolerant and heat-loving, it thrives in full sun and rocky, well-drained soil. Its dramatic silhouette and historic cultural significance make it a treasured feature in arid gardens and desert landscapes. Aloe dichotoma is considered toxic to pets if ingested and is not pet friendly for cats and dogs, as aloe species can cause gastrointestinal upset and lethargy in animals.
