We de-muck and fill salt marshes to our detriment. Like wetlands everywhere, they act as stormwater collectors and shock absorbers capable of mitigating the effects of high tides and big waves. Okihasi’s Salt Marsh men’s shirt highlights these essential habitats that play host to wading birds, keening ospreys, opportunistic redfish and hungry gators. Stay cool in the midst of them all with a shirt that gives them a shout-out.

Salt marshes combat shoreline erosion, knock down storm surges and filter water, capturing nutrients that can lead to algae blooms. It’s little wonder that local and state governments have moved to protect these marshes from development or to require a developer to create compensating wetlands whenever a marsh is compromised. Marshes teem with fish and wildlife. Some of the showiest of birds flock to the marshes, like fancy men and women headed to posh nightclubs. The marshes provide hiding places for prey species and ambush points for speckled trout and redfish. They are home to plant species that have developed a tolerance of salt- and brackish water. Once the province of birdwatchers and naturalists and people on the lam, the salt marshes are now frequented by anglers in specially designed flats boats with shallow drafts. An entire industry has grown up around the redfish, as popular among saltwater anglers as largemouth bass are among freshwater habitues. The redfish finds its food primarily on the bottom and is equipped with powerful jaws for which a crab’s armor is not the least problem. But there are times, too, when it can be teased to the surface with a floating lure. The angler who experiences a topwater strike from a redfish is sure to be back at the marsh next weekend. - Steve Bornhoft

More on the Salt Marsh

This ecosystem provides numerous ecosystem services for us, including protecting shorelines from erosion caused by tidal and wave forces, reducing storm surges during hurricanes, water filtration of nutrient and sediment pollution, and much more! They also provide critical habitat for native bird species like blue herons, snowy egrets, kingfishers, ospreys, and many more. The salt marsh is also home to many fish and invertebrate species we like to eat including blue crabs, oysters, red drum, and scallops. Protecting this incredibly valuable ecosystem should continue to be a priority for us all!

Very well written, great coping ideas for toddlers!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
A little backstory - my son hits. It’s not like aggressive but he is 19 months and tends to use his hands when he is frustrated. That being said I am genuinely impressed with this book. It seems long but it’s not. It’s a good length but my toddler was able to sit through the whole thing. It has plenty of pictures for each coping skill, making it one skill per page. My son seemed to really be paying attention and absorbing the book. The author did well putting things in simpler terms while also continuing to repeat why hitting is bad. The author describes many different ways why hitting hurts, makes people sad, hurts them physically and mentally. It’s all inclusive, different kids that all look different. That was a bonus for me. I love books who acknowledge us all. It teaches our children to do the same. Pages are sturdy, they are paper not that waxy laminated material. But they’re thick and the book is structured well. Books are such an important part of children’s development and vocabulary. My son has learned a whole new vocabulary. This book has helped him put faces, pictures to his feelings. It has made those feelings real and seen. Sign me up for all the books like this!

Decent book with good techniques for kids
Format: Paperback
Cute book that my two and a half year old will reach for every now and then. She'll try mimicking what they're doing, like clenching her fists and blowing bubbles, while she reads it. However, she doesn't really use the techniques when she is mad and just telling her "we don't hit when we're mad" and "we don't hit our friends/mama/daddy/etc" has been more effective. But maybe when she's older this will help if she starts hitting again.

Perfect aged book
Format: Paperback
I truly liked this book for our son when he was 3 years old. It was done very simple and to the point. It allowed you as a parent to add on if you wanted and to talk about the pages. This was a very helpful book in our house.
