Loet Vanderveen was known for his love of animals and studied them as a boy visiting the local zoo on a daily basis until 1940 when the city of Rotterdam where he grew up was bombed by the Germans killing over 500 people and obliterating the city including the zoo. Vanderveen, being of partial Jewish descent, found himself alone without parents as a child fleeing to the Belgian border. After living in Paris and New York city he settled in California where he built a home and became very successful at designing his bronze sculptures. Loet Vanderveen died in 2015, but his works are still very sought after today and cherished in many museums.
