The Historical Context of Suprematism in Mower

Understanding the Suprematist Movement

Kazimir Malevich, a pioneer of the Suprematist movement, created "Mower" in 1912. This artwork embodies the essence of Suprematism, which emphasizes basic geometric forms and a limited color palette. Malevich sought to express pure artistic feeling, moving away from representational art. His work reflects the tumultuous socio-political climate of early 20th-century Russia, where artists began to challenge traditional norms. The Mower stands as a testament to this revolutionary spirit, showcasing the shift towards abstraction and the exploration of form.

Malevich's Influence on Modern Art

Malevich's "Mower" significantly influenced modern art, paving the way for future movements like Constructivism and Abstract Expressionism. His radical approach to composition and color inspired countless artists to explore abstraction. The painting's geometric simplicity and emotional depth resonate with contemporary themes, making it a cornerstone of modern artistic philosophy. Malevich's legacy continues to inspire artists who seek to break free from conventional representation.

Visual Analysis of Mower: Composition and Color

Breaking Down the Geometric Shapes

In "Mower," Malevich employs a striking arrangement of geometric shapes. The composition features bold rectangles and triangles that create a dynamic sense of movement. This use of geometry not only captures the essence of the subject but also reflects the mechanization of rural life. The interplay of shapes invites viewers to engage with the painting on multiple levels, encouraging a deeper understanding of its abstract nature.

The Symbolism of Color in Mower

Color plays a vital role in "Mower," with Malevich using a limited palette to evoke emotion. The vibrant greens and earthy browns symbolize the connection to nature, while the stark contrasts highlight the tension between man and the environment. This thoughtful use of color enhances the painting's overall impact, inviting viewers to reflect on the themes of growth and labor in rural life.

Thematic Elements: Nature and Abstraction

Interpreting the Relationship Between Man and Nature

"Mower" explores the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world. Malevich's abstraction of the mower suggests a harmonious coexistence, where man interacts with nature through labor. This theme resonates with the agrarian lifestyle of early 20th-century Russia, emphasizing the importance of agriculture in shaping society. The painting invites viewers to contemplate their own connection to nature and the impact of industrialization.

Abstract Representation of Rural Life

Through "Mower," Malevich presents an abstract representation of rural life. The painting captures the essence of agricultural labor while stripping away unnecessary details. This focus on abstraction allows viewers to appreciate the fundamental aspects of farming, such as toil and perseverance. Malevich's work serves as a reminder of the beauty found in simplicity and the significance of rural traditions.

Malevich's Technique: Brushwork and Texture

Examining the Use of Oil Paint in Mower

Kazimir Malevich's choice of oil paint in "Mower" enhances the painting's richness and depth. The smooth application of paint creates a vibrant surface that draws the viewer in. Malevich's technique showcases his mastery of oil painting, allowing for a blend of colors that adds dimension to the geometric forms. This meticulous approach to oil paint contributes to the overall emotional resonance of the artwork.

Texture and Depth: A Closer Look at the Surface

The texture in "Mower" adds another layer of complexity to the piece. Malevich's brushwork varies from smooth to impasto, creating a tactile experience for the viewer. This interplay of texture invites closer inspection, revealing the nuances of the painting. The depth achieved through these techniques enhances the visual impact, making "Mower" a captivating work of art.

Why the revisionism?
Format: Paperback
I kinda want to give this a try but I dislike that the artist chose to change Robin's costume. What is this? Dick Grayson Robin always wore the same costume, so why is a "throwback" story using new uniforms? (Batman's is also not quite the original.) I guess modern readers just think the classic togs are "silly," but that's on them. Respect the material, comics creators! Or leave it alone.

A new perspective on an old and familiar story. The art is outstanding. The story is compelling. It needs to be a regular ongoing series. DC...please handle this. Thanks.

Probably the best thing to come out of the "New 52" reboot
Format: Paperback
In general, I'm not a big fan of the new 52 reboot of the DC universe. On the other hand, it produced this really interesting investigation of the iffy morality and general maladjustment and emotional fallout caused by the "child soldier" issue of the multiple underage vigilantes in the Batman family of comic books. The scripting for this story is excellent, in that it makes clear the broad range of personalities represented by the 4 Robins, Bluebird, Spoiler, and Black Bat (who isn't named as such in this particular story for some reason), and aside from that the art is really gorgeous. I think this may very well be the best thing to come out of the new 52 reboot.
